Returning to Avonlea over the break, Anne is worried when she learns her old friend Ruby is sick. Anne frequently visits Ruby’s house to rekindle old ties, but Ruby only wants to talk about boys, the same as ever. Anne writes a short story to distract herself from how painful it is to watch Ruby’s health gradually worsen, but Ruby’s condition doesn’t improve. Anne’s story is rejected by publishers, and she says she will give up writing, but Mr. Harrison gives her the advice that, if he was in her place, he would keep on writing stories.
